(1). A Popular Book You Did Not Like
City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments) by Cassandra Clare
I remember reading this around the time the Twilight series was finishing and it was so boring! The love triangles, possible incest, dull-as-hell characters – everything about this book was awful.
(2). A Book Series that Everyone Hates But You Love
I struggled to find an answer for this but I know that this series gets a lot of hate for ‘stealing’ and being ‘unoriginal’. I am aware of the direct links to Tolkien – Paolini wears his influences on his sleeve but he does a brilliant job. I loved this series.
(3). A Love Triangle Where The Main Character Ends Up With the Person You Didn’t Want Them to End Up With
Happily, I have no answer to this as I know of none. Love-triangles can go jump off a cliff.
(4). A Popular Genre You Rarely Reach For
I don’t know why, but I really struggle to get into a lot of urban fantasy. Jim Butcher is a great writer but I never finished the first book of his series.
(5). A Popular Character You Did Not Like
Don’t get me wrong, this trilogy is one of my favourites. Elend, however, was a struggle to read at times. He did redeem himself a little towards the end though. He just wasn’t very interesting.
(6). A Popular Author You Can’t Seem to Get Into
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
I really want to enjoy this series as I have heard many good things, but I just can’t seem to get past the first few chapters. Hopefully, the new tv series will change my mind and I’ll finally pick the books up again.
(7). Popular Tropes You Are Tired of Seeing
I’ve already mentioned my hatred of love-triangles, so my other answer would be The Chosen One.
Sometimes, this trope can work, but I am yet to see one after Harry Potter.
(8). A popular series you have no interest in reading.
Anything in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld universe. I can already feel the hatred of the reader right now! I just struggle a lot with ‘wacky’ fantasy (is it called absurdist?). I tried The Colour of Magic but couldn’t get into it, even though I could see how fun it would be to someone who liked that sort of thing.
(9). The saying goes “the book is always better than the movie” but what movie do you prefer to the book?
I’m cheating a little, but The Handmaid’s Tale. The book is brilliant, but the first season of the tv show was incredible!
