Quick, standalone Sci-fi & Fantasy Books to Read this Summer

Stand-alone fantasy books can be hard to find but if you don’t want to get trapped in a series but still love the fantasy genre, it can be difficult to pick anything up. SF has almost the opposite problem! Here is a short list of suggestions:

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

I put The Hobbit at the top of the list because we all know it had to be mentioned. There are links between this book and Tolkien’s Legendarium, but his works are not a series but stories based in the same world. The Hobbit is a perfect introduction to Tolkien as well as being an easy Summer read. Check out my review for it here.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman

As it is currently a TV show, having just finished its second season, you might have seen it and be craving some more – so read the book!!! – or you might want to read the book before trying out the show. Either way, this large fantasy novel is surprisingly quick to read and one of the best stand-alones there is. See my review for it here!

Boreville by Tommye Turner

Yes, this is mine. If you want a quick read one afternoon and you like Black Mirror-type stories, this is for you. I’ve written a post about it HERE and you can see it on GOODREADS or AMAZON too.
