Below is a template that I use when sending submissions to literary magazines. I hope this answers the question of how to write a cover letter for submissions to a literary magazine.

Dear Editor/s

  • This is short, simple, and polite. If you know the name of the editor, then address it to them directly using their full name, e.g. Dear Mr John Smith.

Please find attached my short-story ‘Title of story here’. (Word Count: ‘9999’)

  • Again, this is short and simple. It is not too direct, but it does not waffle. Editors read these in their spare time- they don’t have time to read a whole paragraph when this will suffice
  • Replace ‘short-story’ with ‘poem’ or whatever you are submitting.
  • You don’t have to include a word count, but sometimes editors do appreciate it.

I currently live in ‘enter place’, ‘enter what you do – student, job…’

  • Keep this to one sentence. Unless they specify on their guidelines that they want an entire bio, don’t give them one.

I hope that you will find my story to be a good fit for your magazine and readers.

 Thank you for your consideration.

 Sincerely,

‘Your name here’

It’s that simple! I always get kind responses from editors when I send submissions like this because it is both professional and friendly.

Remember to follow their guidelines closely – they will throw your work away without reading it otherwise. Show that you care by following their steps exactly. If this means you have to write a bio or include a short summary of your work, include it in the cover letter where you see fit – unless they specify where they want it.
